FROZEN IN TIME

Atlantic Gallery - 548 W 28th St #540, New York, NY 10001
On View December 6–17

Artists' Opening Reception - Thursday, December 8 | 5pm - 8pm

FROZEN IN TIME explores the forces shaping our world through recorded moments of geologic change that are beautiful and mysterious and add to our collective appreciation of how we are connected to this process. Jeff Shapiro’s work responds to the artistic elements that exist in nature; texture, form, color, and composition, as well as the different stages of transformation that occurs with water; flowing ice, running water, lagoons. Jonathan Grengs examines a broader anthropological view with sculptures that reference contemporary consumer materials suspended into an archeological context reminding us of the ephemerality of life and existence.

ACCORD STUDIO & GALLERY VISITS

Throughout the spring and summer months we will be offering reserved studio/gallery visits. Due to the restrictions of Covid, we are limiting the number of people at any given time to 4 in your party. We will of course use social distancing and masks. We have ample room inside and outside. The good news is that this creates a more intimate experience and allows me to give more attention to you individually. We are offering reserved time slots up to 45 minutes between 10:00am and 5:00pm each day. If visiting the studio/gallery in person is not an option, you may arrange a virtual Zoom session to view work in the gallery with us.

Contact Jeff to reserve a time by clicking here.

Ceramics in Japan & Italy Session Recordings Available Now

A Brief Historical Introduction with an Intimate Perspective
BY JEFF SHAPIRO

New York clay artist Jeff Shapiro joined Artful Journeys to discuss the history, evolution and aesthetics of ceramics in Japan and Italy. During 4 sessions, Jeff led us into the artistry of clay. Jeff, who has become a story teller as well as an artist, lived and studied for 9 years in Japan. 36 years ago he settled in Accord, New York where he resides with his wife Hinako. He has led many workshops and forums about the creative ceramic arts, kiln-building, and discussions about the Japanese aesthetic.

“This series is not meant to ‘spoon feed’ information. It is meant to peek one’s curiosity and encourages more questions"

Individual recordings are available now for $15 a session.
During his four 1-hour long Armchair Journey talks, he does a simple exploration into the history of Japanese and Italian ceramics, takes us to kiln sites, some of which he helped build, explores the characteristics of clay and how they affect the artistic creation, and introduces us to his colleagues and their work through his stories. Shapiro intertwines anecdotes from his experiences both in Japan and Italy to give some insight to this very special relationship of these two distinctively different cultures.
